Hitch Hiking Canada, 2013

this is the hitchhiking trip i did solo over the course of a month august-september

saying goodbye to my garden in Turner was a little heart breaking

i ended up getting sick my first day hitch hiking and stayed for 5 days with my aunt in Farmington.  I had a lot of time to identify plants, hang out in the garden, and look at her antique shop

it took me one long day (14 hours) to hitch hike from Farmington to Montreal.  Beautiful city, covered in street art and gorgeously manicured parks

the quebec flag in montreal

my friend conrad was a great host for my week in montreal.  we went to a queer bookfair and a good punk show at katacombes co-op.  i did some work trade for him in montreal and let me make a bunch of buttons. i've been selling them on the street for a dollar a piece, helps to make food and travel money.

after a week in montreal, i hitched to quebec.  walked around the boardwalk, plains of abraham, and saw cirque du soleil for free at night.  above is the notre-dame de quebec.

I met a great friend who cooked dinner with me and i camped out by the st charles river in a city park.  woke up to a lovely sunrise and took off east on the trans-canadienne highway.

i had a hitch hiking partner for the day named david. he spoke very little english but did share vegetables from his garden and honey from his bees.  we parted ways in rivier du loup, where he was going to pick sweetgrass to make incense for the huron tribes, and i continued southwest to Grand Falls, New Brunswick.  I spend the night there with a family who picked me up hitch hiking and the next night i slept overlooking the gorge at the center of Grand Falls.

Next i spent a few days hitching up to hike mount carleton, the highest point in the maritimes.  it was shorter than katahdin, but still very beautiful views.  i then started east for halifax.

it took me 2 days to get to halifax. i explored the public gardens and sold art on the boardwalk.

Saw a play that was part of the fringe festival in Halifax, hung out at the Anchor Archive Zine Library, met some great folks who i was able to crash with in the city, and drank some amazing hard cider.  spent a few days at the Ark drop in center meeting other travelers, musicians, artists and punks.
everything i traveled with through canada, summer 2013.
i got back to fairfield maine in one day, 2 rides through canada and maine.  no hassle at the border and i got to swing back through maine to say hi to my friends and family before continuing south and west.
